Do you ever find yourself daydreaming about how on earth you got here? Not necessarily birth- but maybe. Like right here, right now. Have you traced backwards all the steps that put you in that seat, at this very moment? It’s a little crazy. Especially if you write it out on paper. If you create your own timeline, starting from now and working backwards, you can literally see the ways God has moved in your life. If you’re not a Christian, you may see the ways God hasn’t moved in your life because you haven’t given Him a chance. Or even if you ARE a Christian, and you haven’t given him freedom to rule over your steps. Which we all do from time to time in certain areas. But to actually see what He has done in the areas that you HAVE surrendered is pretty cool. Imagine what He could do with total surrender.
I encourage everyone to do this. Draw a line across a page and just jot down the highlights (or lowlights).
When I did this I was able to see just how God strategically moved me into certain areas and situations, and placed people in my life. I was able to see that “Oh this happened because of this…”, or “wow that would have never happened if this hadn’t….”
Its like a life long game of chess.
I thought of how we can see amazing chess-like moves in the bible. My favorite of all time, is the story of Joseph and Pharaoh. Joseph’s own brothers sold him into slavery out of jealousy. God had given Joseph the gift of interpreting dreams, which his brothers didn’t like or respect. After an incredible turn of events, he ended up ruling over Egypt alongside Pharaoh, and Joseph’s brothers had to bow down to him. What Satan had planned for destruction, God used to move Joseph into perfect position.
In Chess, the queen is the most powerful piece. The pawn is the least powerful. We can be like the queen and make choices which will lead us forward. Or we can be like the pawn, and just move where we are pushed. Good or bad. We have the power to make it count IF we allow God to take over the game.
We have the power to make it count…
Sometimes we feel that we aren’t worthy enough for the Almighty God to have such a detailed plan and strategy for us. Why would he do all this, with so much detail, just for me? Well it’s not just for me. It’s for HIS GLORY. But he does entrust us all with different things. Different burdens, different gifts, different hardships, different crosses to bear. And man some of those crosses are heavy. But no matter what it is, you better believe He can and will use it for His Kingdom, IF you will allow Him. If we allow ourselves to be His “queen” in this Holy Chess game, He will move us in ways we can’t imagine.
The only problem is that Christ is not the only one who would love to work in our lives. He is not the only one with a strategy. And a very detailed one at that. Satan is moving his pawns. Forward is only a direction. It’s not an indication of good or bad. No matter what we choose, we are always moving forward in life.
Take Pharaoh’s wife.
When Joseph was promoted into a position where he was basically running the household for Pharaoh, he was spending a lot of time with Pharaoh’s wife. So she was totally “macking” on him. BUT…..
Now Joseph was well-built and handsome, 7 and after a while his master’s wife took notice of Joseph and said, “Come to bed with me!”
8 But he refused. “With me in charge,” he told her, “my master does not concern himself with anything in the house; everything he owns he has entrusted to my care. 9 No one is greater in this house than I am. My master has withheld nothing from me except you, because you are his wife. How then could I do such a wicked thing and sin against God?”10 And though she spoke to Joseph day after day, he refused to go to bed with her or even be with her.
This peeved Pharaoh’s wife. She wasn’t going to be rejected, so home-girl got her ultimate revenge by crying wolf. Joseph was thrown into prison an innocent man.
Satan is an expert at taking what is meant for good and destroying it. We are merely pawns in his game. While our goal is to “Protect the King”, Satan’s only goal is to make sure we can’t. He is on the defense constantly. He has no plan for us in the end, except to make sure we are destroyed. In chess, though, that would result in a voluntary forfeit due to “lack of material”. So Satan loses in the end. But he is working overtime to make sure we can no longer stand. Joseph could have turned his back on God and became bitter and angry. His path would have looked entirely different. But he knew there was a strategy. A divine strategy.
14 So Pharaoh sent for Joseph, and he was quickly brought from the dungeon. When he had shaved and changed his clothes, he came before Pharaoh.
15 Pharaoh said to Joseph, “I had a dream, and no one can interpret it.But I have heard it said of you that when you hear a dream you can interpret it.”
16 “I cannot do it,” Joseph replied to Pharaoh, “but God will give Pharaoh the answer he desires.”
Joseph spent two years in prison. But God used his gifts even while in a dungeon. He had the opportunity to interpret dreams through God from behind bars. He eventually was brought out to interpret Pharaoh’s dreams, and was placed at the head of the land, right beside Pharaoh. He was trusted to make decisions for Egypt and protect it when hard times came, as they surely would. When the hard times did come in the form of a famine, those same brothers who sold him were forced to come to Pharaoh for help, and just as Joseph had told them all those years ago about his own dream where they would bow down to him, it came to pass, and they did just that.
We know how this game ends. We know that we win in the end. But that doesn’t stop the devil from fighting for your soul.
Know the difference.
Look back on your last 5 or even 10 years. Where has God placed you? Can you see where you could have easily been “taken out” by Satan? But God protected you? Maybe some terrible and tragic things have happened which Satan meant for total destruction, but you are here right now, reading this. Whatever it is, LET GOD USE IT. There isn’t one thing that has happened to you or me that God can’t use for the Kingdom. We are in a strategy right now. But we must decide today whose strategy we are in. Just because we are all playing the same game doesn’t mean we all have the same purpose.
Are you a queen or a pawn?
