Whats the point…
In the book of James, he puts a lot of emphasis on faith without works. He says that faith without works is pretty much a dead faith…
14 What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save them? 15 Suppose a brother or a sister is without clothes and daily food. 16 If one of you says to them, “Go in peace; keep warm and well fed,” but does nothing about their physical needs, what good is it? 17 In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead. -James 2:14-17
What’s the point in having faith if we aren’t going to share WHY we have faith or WHO we have faith in? This isn’t done with words alone. In fact, we do a better job of showing off our faith when we actually ACT on it.
Like the scripture illustrates, what if we passed by a naked man on the road and said to him “go….be warm, naked man, be warm”.
Is our words alone going to make him warm? Umm no. If you aren’t able to clothe him, the least you could do is pray for him, and with him. Anything is better than empty words.
Our faith is not based on works, but when we truly follow Christ, the works come as a biproduct. If you find yourself tallying your works, or boasting about them, you might want to do a gut check…because there’s a good chance you are doing the works without the faith.
Questions to ask:
- Do my actions show my faith?
- Are my “works” for tallying purposes, or collecting points?
- How can I look for opportunities in my everyday walk to show my faith?
30 day challenge – read more in the “hit repeat again” previous blog…
1. Write down a list of things you need to pray for
This is not a wish list
Try not to just make them all about you
Keep the list small and purposeful
2. Spend at least 30 minutes in uninterrupted prayer
A scheduled time not just throughout the day
Ideas: 30 minute drive to work, actually getting up early, skipping a tv show, praying before bed
3. Read at least one scripture passage a day
Pick a book of the Bible and read a passage each day
Follow our blog for daily scripture
4. And if you fail one day out of 30 –HIT REPEAT AGAIN!
